EU expected to open antitrust investigation into Facebook Marketplace

Enlarge The European Commission is on the verge of opening a formal probe of Facebook and its free Marketplace service, according to reports from Reuters and the Financial Times. While the scope of the investigation is still being determined, the European Commission, the bloc’s executive arm, has queried Facebook and its competitors on at least three separate occasions. Those questions aimed to determine whether, in pushing Marketplace on its users, Facebook abused its market power. Given that a formal probe seems imminent, it’s likely that EC officials believe there’s a decent chance the company did. Facebook’s Marketplace first appeared in…

A startup using minerals to draw down CO2 has scored funding—and its first buyer

A new startup is relying on minerals to pull carbon dioxide out of the air, in one of the first commercial efforts to deploy what’s known as enhanced weathering to slow climate change. Heirloom Carbon Technologies says it could do carbon dioxide removal for $50 a ton once it reaches commercial scale, which would come in well below the estimates for other industrial approaches. Its goal is to remove 1 billion tons of the main greenhouse gas fueling climate change by 2035. The San Francisco–based company will announce on May 26 that it has raised an undisclosed amount of seed…

Product Review for the Ultenic U10 Cordless Vacuum Cleaner

This is my product review of the Ultenic U10 Cordless Vacuum Cleaner. I have reviewed many vacuum cleaners in my day. I’m pleased to say the Ultenic U10 Cordless Vacuum Cleaner is a dandy little vac. The Ultenic U10 Cordless Vacuum Cleaner I want a vac that looks slightly techie — but one that will actually do the job. And I don’t care how nice a vac it is — if I get a hernia lifting it — I get a little testie. I’m pleased to say that even with the battery pack (which comes charged, by the way) attached…

The most notable aspect of today’s mission is that it would be the 100th consecutive successful flight for the company. This record dates back to June 2015, when the Falcon 9 rocket’s second stage failed during the launch of a cargo supply…

The 2021 BMW M3: When you’re driving it, you don’t have to see its nose

Yes, the grille is divisive, but you can’t see it when you’re driving the car. I have a confession to make. Over the past few months of gazing at images in wide-eyed awe and after spending a week with the new sixth-generation M3 in the flesh, I’ve grown accustomed to the look. The front end no longer stuns and confuses me; it’s simply the new M3. While that’s not exactly a ringing endorsement for the design, I’d like to think that it offers a semblance of hope: with time, you can see past the face. More importantly, this new M…
